A French bistro in the heart of Stavanger where everything clicked: great wines, heavenly food and wonderfully friendly staff. We loved every minute.
In a white wooden house by Breitorget, right in the centre of Stavanger, you'll find Matbaren Bistro, Renaa's French bistro. Inside there are dark blue walls, leather banquettes and candles on the tables. The staff were wonderfully friendly, and we were having a great time from the moment we sat down. We went for the rack of lamb and the turbot. The lamb was pink and juicy, served with spinach and a deep, glossy sauce. The turbot came in a light, airy sauce. On the side: crispy fried potatoes. Heavenly! The wines were excellent, and we finished with crème brûlée and a chocolate tart with flaky salt and a scoop of ice cream.

Matbaren is the informal bistro in the Renaa family, which also includes the Michelin restaurant RE-NAA. You can tell from the ingredients and the craftsmanship, but the mood is relaxed and warm. It works just as well for a romantic evening for two as for a celebration. Book a table in advance, especially at weekends. Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger) is only a few minutes' walk away, so an evening stroll among the white wooden houses makes a lovely end to the night.
